Layout also matters: diagonal patterns, herringbone and feature bands add cutting time, and every niche, step or curved detail is skilled manual work.

The second driver is what we find under the old finish. Removing existing tiles can reveal loose plaster, hollow screeds or old waterproofing that must be rebuilt before new tiles go on — proper preparation is not optional. Plumbing changes, built-in cisterns and underfloor heating integration extend the scope further.
